Li'L Bo Weevil back next
Built by: Jim Garubba in Sterling, VA
The AMT Li’l Bo Weevil is a kit I’d only seen available in collections of random or glue-bomb
parts, until, one day I spotted one that was complete, including the box, instructions, and decals, with only the body sections and some engine parts brush painted. I pulled the trigger, and then had to restrain myself from working on it immediately upon delivery (I waited a week.)
The kit has the standard Corvair engine setup for the most part, but unlike other buggies, the frame is just that - a frame, rather than the VW chassis that is so common. That frame is done up in Flat Soft Iron.
All of the optional parts were in the box, but I preferred the classic windshield and either the soft top or the custom roll box compared to the rap-around “pope car” glass, which just seemed odd to me.
As it turns out, the body brush-painting had been done in an enamel, without a primer coat, so it refused normal purple pond stripping. I ended up sanding the brush strokes smooth, then priming the body and painting it in a tangerine gold pearl with black satin accents.
The seat is oil-rubbed bronze to mimic sparkly black vinyl and the dash is black and wood grain.
The kit decals were of a very 70s wonky stars-and-stripes design, so I went with some custom flames, all under gloss coats.
