Li'l Gypsy Wagon back next
Built by: Jim Garubba (Plastimatic) in Sterling, Virginia
Here’s my take on a box stock Li'l Gypsy Wagon.
I've seen this done as well-weathered and dark wood, but I thought I'd keep it bright and well-weathered. Many of the reference pics I found for gypsy vardas showed theunder carriage and wheels as an ochre-yellow, and the roof a bright teal. Making the sides a light off-teal allowed the decals to pop a bit (of course, I rearranged them a bit).
Nothing really finicky about the build. The gumballs are a little softer than previous Li'l kits, so the hubs fit in easier. I did have to enlarge the axle holes. And, of course, those individual side pipes need patience.
The only adjustment I made was to add some little "L" strips to the top and bottom of the side walls to allow the roof to sit better on the cabin.
While I often do drybrushing, the roof and base were done in solid teal spray, followed by washes of a craft paint antiquing medium. It takes some finessing to keep it from being overdone. The cabin was done with rattle can oversprays.
All in all, I’m happy to have this one on the shelf.
