Sand Crab    back  next

Built by: Dave Rasmussen in Mequon, WI

I never built the Sand Crab as a kid and gave it a try with an original 1969 version of the kit.  Per Scalemates, this was the only year this kit was released. The box and decals were original and quite old and the kit had been started by someone, which presented some minor challenges to re-do.  In the top photo below, I juxtaposed my build with an original, sealed 1969 kit!

I did not paint the body and instead used Novus to polish it, which had some advantages when I painted the seats--I was able to use an exacto knife to remove excess paint along the seat edges.

I found an old ad on the web that I used in this photo layout. It is not to be confused with the original Monogram collector card. <-- link

Here are two things that surprised me in this build:

  1. Unlike other Sand Scab builds I have seen, this kit had "smoked" glass and not "green" glass.  Why?

  2. I had not seen anyone else use the "sand stand" that came with the kit.  Hmmmmm.  It's fun to pose the showrod this way and looks like a hoot on the shelf next to my other builds.
Anyhow, I was able to use re-popped decals from our "Decal Digs" time here at the Rally and it turned out pretty well.  It's a fun and simple little showrod, but I think the graphic scheme needs a peace sign somewhere to be 100% period-correct :)
