Bad Medicine    back  next

Built by: Scott Doyle in Darlington, South Carolina

This is my build of Tom Daniel's “Bad Medicine”.  I’ve always loved this car and, hey, it has a skeleton!  I have not built a show rod for over 35 years and I really enjoyed the experience.

While the kit is pretty much as it comes in the box, I did make a few upgrades and modifications:

1. Drilled out the ends of the exhaust headers.
2. Sanded and sealed the seams on the rear tires and added decals for the wording on the tires.
3. Wired the engine and distributor.
4. Added red “glowing” eyes to the skeleton on the rear of the cab.

I finished the body with Model Car World (MCW) lacquer Panther Pink paint.  I have had this bottle of paint for over 15 years and it still airbrushes great.  The color is a perfect match for the kit’s colored plastic parts.  I used MR. Paint Chrome Yellow for the engine block and components. The seat was Tamiya semi-gloss black with a dry brush of Tamiya German Gray.  The parachute was a base coat of Gunze Mr. Color US Aircraft Interior Green with a dry brush of Tamiya yellow-green.  All the chrome was stripped by dipping the parts in Purple Power cleaner and then sanded and cleaned up before covering them with an Alcad II gloss black basecoat.  I then sprayed it with Alcad II chrome.  I find this gives a more “scale” chrome look than the kit chrome provides.

Dave asked me to mention how I painted the skeleton and bone parts.  I used Apple Barrel brand hobby paint from the craft section at Walmart ($.58 per bottle).  These are acrylic and brush very well over styrene.  I used a base coat of antique white first and, when dry, dry-brushed regular white for highlights.  I then brushed a coat of Future floor wax over the parts and let them dry before using a Tamiya premixed brown wash.  When dry, I finished with a light airbrush coat of clear flat.
